Protect Yourself From Viruses
Bill Paris, MLS Technician
A computer
virus is a program written to inflict damage on your PC. Anyone who
accesses email or the Internet should have up to date virus software
to protect against infection. Computer viruses range from annoying to
completely disabling your computer. In a trade where time is money,
computer viruses can all but wipe out your competitive edge.
There are many ways to protect yourself against this threat to your
success. Simple common sense methods like not opening email from people
you don’t know and making sure not to download attachments you
are unsure of, are a good start but are not perfect.
The best way to protect your PC from outside threats is to have up
to date anti-virus software.
The two main brands of antivirus software are Norton Antivirus 2002
and McAfee. These two brands are among the most trusted anti-virus software
on the market. Both can be setup to do automatic virus updates and automatic
virus scans. Norton has the added advantage of being able to check your
outlook email as it is sent or received.
If you don’t have virus software installed, you can scan your
PC online today. Norton has available on its website an online virus
scanner. To use this tool, go to http://security2.norton.com/ssc/ and
click “Scan for viruses.” The page will
download and install the temporary scanner. This tool is great for scanning
on the go but is not a replacement for having the actual product.
